Three Truths and Three Lies about Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort

3 Truths and 3 Lies: Disney's Grand Floridian Resort

Fact & Fiction: 3 Truths and 3 Misconceptions About Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort

Of all Deluxe Resorts at Walt Disney World, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is the most misunderstood of all

Over the past 30+ years, I’ve heard many guests “complain” about the Grand Floridian (or make statements that simply are not true), sometimes when they haven’t actually stayed there. They’re basing certain viewpoints on preconceived notions that are not accurate.

It’s no secret to any of my readers that Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is my go-to personal favorite. So with that in mind, I put together this post to set the record straight and highlight three truths that you should know and three lies that you may hear.

Three Truths and Three Lies About Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Three Truths

1. It’s Expensive

While expensive is a relative term, this one is definitely true — at least when compared to other Walt Disney World Resort hotels.

As the Crown Jewel of all Walt Disney World Resort properties, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is, on average, more expensive than any of the other Deluxe Disney Resort hotels. But, it’s a question of value. Yes, it costs more. Do you get more for your dollar as a result? Yes. From the grand ambiance and theming, to its premier location and wealth of dining, shopping and other activities, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort simply offers more than any other Walt Disney World hotel. So while it does cost more, you do get more for your dollar (and palatial surroundings on top of that).

2. It’s Ideally Situated

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is in an ideal location in the Magic Kingdom Resort area, which is one of the most sought after of all Walt Disney World Resort neighbourhoods.

While you cannot walk to the Magic Kingdom like you can from Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Bay Lake Tower, you also won’t be overlooking a parking lot when you look towards the Magic Kingdom. This is important if you are paying for a Theme Park View room. Plus, it’s only one monorail stop to the Magic Kingdom and one boat stop on the return trip. So the convenience factor is excellent. On top of that, you can take a short leisurely stroll along a scenic pathway to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort next door, which is an added bonus and a walk worth taking.

3. It’s the Best that Disney Has to Offer

If you are an upscale or luxury traveler and you’re looking for the best that Disney has to offer at Walt Disney World, then this is the only destination that you should consider.

While you can argue the merits of other Disney Deluxe Resort hotels (and most of them are quite respectable as upscale properties in their own right), there is no disputing that this is the number one choice for the upscale or luxury traveler (assuming that you want to stay onsite, which is a wise decision). Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is the Crown Jewel of the Walt Disney World hotel line-up.

Three Lies about Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort

1. It’s Stuffy

To those who have never stayed here, there is a misconception that Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is too stuffy and uptight to relax. This is untrue.

I can understand how some guests may equate upscale and ornate with stuffy, but the two are not tied together here. While Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa is definitely ornate with its Victorian theming, it is definitely not stuffy. In fact, it’s about as welcoming in its Florida southern charm as you can get. So don’t make the mistake of equating ambiance with stuffiness. If it’s welcome comfort that you seek, you won’t go wrong by staying here. Take a walk through the comfortable lobby area late in the evening and you’ll find some pretty relaxed guests sipping cocktails and listening to live music, while kids play in the children’s area and open spaces. Not what I would call stuffy.

2. It’s Not Kid Friendly

Speaking of kids, whether you have infants, toddlers, younger kids or teens, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is an excellent place to be. In my opinion, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is unequivocal best choice for families with kids of any Disney hotel at Walt Disney World.

From the comfortable surroundings to large, welcoming lobby (that younger kids love), Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort offers more than any other Disney hotel to keep you and your kids happy. There are exceptional pools, an Alice in Wonderland splash pad area, onsite character dining, unique experiences for the kids and much, much more. There are things that you can see and do here that you cannot find at any other Walt Disney World Resort. Just remember: as I noted in my previous point, being grand does not mean being unfriendly to kids. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

3. There’s Nothing to Do There

Sometimes, guests make the colossal mistake of assuming that Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is something akin to an old folks home or retirement village. They believe that upscale, ornate surroundings mean that it’s a quiet, reserved property where you might get shushed as if you were in a library. Not true at all.

There is so much to do at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort that you will never be without something to pass your vacation time — that is, if you decide to spend some time lounging about the property instead of wandering offsite to a park or Disney Springs. And not everything comes with a price. For example, if you have little ones, they’ll love the princess parade in the lobby of the main building (which is cost-free). From shopping, to pools, to basketball, water sports and more, there is something for everyone at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort.
